Interviews
Cloverton
January 2, 2012 | Cameron Bartlett

At this years AltFest, AltRockLive's Cameron Bartlett had the opportunity to sit down with the band Cloverton and talk with them about their band, touring, lifestyle and more.
AltRockLive: How did you guys get your start?
Lance: We met as a worship band. I was a worship leader and these guys came through as musicians. We didn't really pursue it, at first. We just played as a worship team and then some doors opened up. We were given some opportunities to share our music. People, then really believed in us and gave us some platforms to share our music and our ministry. And that's just kind of how things started.
AltRockLive: When or how did you start touring around?
Matt: That started happening in 2009 when we released our first project. We had been recording for a while and when we released the album, we knew we needed to start touring. So we did like 55 dates our first year. Then, 90 dates last year. Now, we're on track to do over 100 this year. It's really evolved as we've been out on the road longer.
AltRockLive: You guys were on the K Love friends and family tour, right? Tell us about that experience.
Layne: We were given a chance to do that because we entered a contest called, "Rock the Camp: Camp Electric". Through that we were able to go on the K Love cruise. Some of the artists on there were like Matthew West, Casting Crowns, Newsboys and Leeland. We opened for Casting Crowns and it was an awesome experience! It was kind of surreal that as we finished our stuff and were getting off stage, they were getting on. It's really great to be around people like that on a cruise, so.
AltRockLive: Who are you guys singing to?
Kirby: I knew this was going to happen. Everyone else get's like easy questions and then I get this one. Ha. How Spiritual can you be with this question? No.
We are definitely not disguising who we're singing to and what we're singing about. We do feel that our style of music does have a worship brand to it. It's not necessarily that we write congregational worship songs. But we're definitely trying to worship God with what we do and with our talents, and invest those talents back into ministry.
AltRockLive: So you have a song out on the radio. Tell us some of the vision behind that song and how you've seen it effectively minister.
Lance: Well it's cool because you get to hear a lot of the stories after it's been on the radio. Then people start letting you know how it's affected them and impacted them.
The initial story behind that song was Moses spending time with God on the mountain. When he came down from the mountain he has to wear a veil over his face because he was glowing. God changed him in that experience. It's then the idea that God is still moving and active, and if we choose to be a part of what He's doing, He could change us. It could be something very powerful and beautiful. So that was kind of the idea behind the song.
We've received a lot of emails and stories that have been told to us about when we play shows of how people have taken it in different ways and how it's impacted their own walks and their own journeys. Actually, a lot of what we've heard is from funerals. A lot of people have found real peace in it when a loved one has passed away and they use it at a funeral. That's something we would have never thought about when we first released the song. So it's cool how God can use it however He wants to and that it's not up to us to decide, "Well, this is what we'd like it to be about." He can kind of just do whatever.
AltRockLive: Cool man. That is just such beautiful imagery. What can we expect to come next from you guys?
Matt: Awesomeness. Ha. No.
I had to. You set it up too good.
We were the studio back in May and will be ready to release another full-length in February or March. The deadline is kind of up in the air, right now, because we haven't worked out all of the details yet, but we're excited.
AltRockLive: Cool guy! Well, we look forward to hearing it.
Cloverton told me that if there's a song they all really relate to as a band, it's their song "Great Plans".
