A Day To Remember
September 29, 2009 | Lucy Nguyen
Alt Rock Live recently caught up with vocalist Jeremy Mckinnon and drummer Alex Shelnutt from A Day to Remember. The band is currently on the road for their Pulling Your Pud tour with Parkway Drive, In Fear and Faith, and I See Stars. Despite their busy schedule, the guys took the time to sit down and answer a few questions before their sold out show in Allentown, PA.
ARL: So it's opening night of tour and you guys have already sold out. How do you feel about that?
Jeremy: Well, you know. We're pretty excited. This is one of those places that we've been playing for a really long time so it's always really cool to come back here, and it's great to be coming back on a headliner and it to be sold out before we show up. So, we're pretty excited about it.
ARL: Are you guys excited for the rest of the tour?
Alex: Yeah.
Jeremy: Oh, for sure! We put together a bunch of bands that we found would be really cool, bands we're stoked on. I think it's a good package, so I'm excited to watch bands. I'm a really big fan of Parkway Drive, so I'm pretty excited about it.
ARL: So, how did you pick those support bands?
Jeremy: Well, we're just kind of brainstorming bands.
Alex: We just put a whole bunch of bands in a hat and then we just kind of picked them out.
ARL: Really?
Alex: No. We just like them.
ARL: Are you guys friends with any of them? Have you toured with them at all before?
Alex: We toured with Parkway Drive before.
Jeremy: We've played shows with all of them and we saw I See Stars at this festival we did and they were really cool kids we were really stoked on and yeah, they're young so why not try to help a young band out? Josh actually managed In Fear and Faith at the time so it was like, they're doing well and that made sense that we had those guys. Parkway Drive took us out on a headliner in Australia last year so it was kind of like a way for us to return the favor.
ARL: Do you guys have any tour traditions or anything?
Jeremy: I don't think that we have like, traditions.
Alex: There's just random stuff that will happen, you know.
Jeremy: Right. For instance, on this tour so far we are all addicted to Sopranos because we've never watched it. So randomly a few nights ago we just kind of started watching the first episode and it just snowballed into this thing that's kind of taking over all of our lives.
ARL: What are you plans after this tour? I hear you have a UK tour coming up.
Jeremy: Right, right. We're going over to the UK and Europe with Bring Me the Horizon. It's going to be a co-headliner and we're going to be there for like a month so it's going to be really cool. We also know those guys pretty well so we're pretty excited about it. It's gonna be our first time actually having a full blown tour in another country so it's gonna be pretty interesting.
Alex: To say the least.
Jeremy. Yes.
ARL: Are you planning to have any breaks in between?
Jeremy: Well, we just had like two weeks off right before this little run we did with Silverstein so that was kind of the break and then we're doing this for like two and a half months and then we have a month or so off at around Christmas time.
ARL: So you guys are pretty busy. Isn't that what Homesick came from? Missing your home and family and friends?
Jeremy: Right, right. That cd was written as kind of a way to just feel better about what was going on at the time and, you know, we do feel better about it. It's different now. We don't tour as much in the US so it's kind of different to tour overseas a lot more now because you can't really tour as much in one place. But, you know, we do the same thing we always do.
ARL: What would you say makes all the sacrifices most worth it?
Alex: The fans.
Jeremy: The fans.
Alex: The sweet brags. No, I'm just kidding. I just think it's worth it when you get to the moment when touring overseas and stuff you get to be able to say that you've been to all these places that maybe your parents haven't even seen. And just like, we're playing music. It's kind of crazy. It's just good looking back on it.
Jeremy: For sure. It's definitely cool to tell people stories about what happened when you were gone, and like he was saying about families and stuff it's always awesome. But usually I'll have a family get together and they'll ask me questions about the tour. I don't know, I really enjoy that. It's cool to be able show my family stuff that they wouldn't be able to see, you know.
ARL: You worked with Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory on your newest album, Homesick. How was working with him different from working with the producers on your previous albums?
Jeremy: Well, we still worked with Andrew Wade. That's the only person who we really did like, productions with so he was still a part of it. He's been a part of every record, so that hasn't changed and with Chad, he kind of just produced the overall, entire record. So it was cool working with him because he's got a background on hardcore and pop punk so he really understood where we were coming from and plus he's Alex's hero. So, it works out.
ARL: Any last words?
Alex: Don't do drugs. Stay safe. You know how it is. Love your elders.
Jeremy: Change your socks.
Alex: Brush your teeth.
Jeremy: Floss.
Alex: Look twice before you cross the road.
(background): You mean both ways.
Jeremy: Shit.
Alex: Shit. Yeah, look both ways.
Jeremy: Either way...
ARL: Alright, thank you so much!
Jeremy: No problem!
Alex: Thank you!
